Yesterday we read a 21 page essay about the trials and afterlives of parents who had killed their young children by leaving them locked in cars, and the kids baked to death. I have to write a two page response about it.
Obviously, I can’t lay out the details of a 21 page article here. It was so painful to sit through, I wanted to start screaming. One woman in particular was quoted as saying “I don’t feel the need to forgive myself, because it was an accident.” She was clearly the most infuriating.
15 minutes is an accident. 9 hours of “forgetting” your child is not a “momentary” memory lapse.
The truly amazing thing is most of these people are never convicted of a crime, and continue to care for other children unchecked.
Where do these people park, that no one notices an unattended child for that long? Once at work, my boss and I called the cops on parents who left their sleeping child in the car while the parents came in for coffee. No tolerance, whatsoever.
Grrrrr. You can imagine what my two pages will look like.
